The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test required for admission to many graduate programs (Master’s and PhD)—especially in the United States, and increasingly in Canada, Europe, and other countries.

  • Who Needs It:
    Students applying to MS, MBA, or PhD programs, mainly in fields like engineering, computer science, business, and social sciences.

  • Test Sections:

    1. Verbal Reasoning (130–170 score range)

    2. Quantitative Reasoning (130–170 score range)

    3. Analytical Writing (0–6 score range, two essays)

    4. (As of late 2023, the test has been shortened and the experimental section was removed.)

  • Total Test Time:
    ~1 hour 58 minutes (in the new shorter format)

  • Score Validity:
    GRE scores are valid for 5 years.

  • Format:

    • Offered both online at home and at test centers.

    • Adaptive by section (difficulty of the second section depends on performance in the first).

  • Fees: Around $220 USD, varies slightly by country.
